A Signature Experience

A signature Donald Ross Course

The exclusive, private setting of the golf course remains the same 95 years after the founding of the club.  The 71 par course, designed in 1922, by world renowned architect, Donald Ross, was ranked one of the top 25 private courses in the state by Golf Digest.  Each hole provides challenging yet player friendly opportunities for golfers of all skill levels.  Players can select from 5 sets of tees on each hole based on their skill level and desired challenge. Golfers are required to think strategically as they work their way from the tee to the green.  The key challenge lies within the subtle undulations of the greens and their championship speed and conditioning.

Barton Hills is one of Michigan's premier golf facilities, serving as host to numerous national, state and local championships, including the 98th USGA Women's Amateur and the 22nd USGA Women's Mid-Am Championship.

Course restoration

Barton Hills Country Club has restored the golf course back to its Donald Ross architectural roots offering wider fairways, new green-side and cross bunkers designed to challenge every skill level, while adding more shot making variety and lines of play to our greens. As BHCC celebrated the 90th anniversary of their golf course in the 2012 season, they also prepared for a major course restoration. The Club hired Ron Prichard, an award winning course restoration architect, to direct the project. Highlights of the restoration include:
  • Added more native grasses and fine fescues to provide added definition, visual intimidation, and color that will appeal to all golfers and members viewing the course both from the Course and the Clubhouse.
  • Restored firmer playing conditions on and around greens to give all golfers more varied shot selection and options.
  • Added numerous tee grounds to both shorten and lengthen the course. The added tee options allow more players to enjoy the course by appealing to all age groups and skill levels. With the added tee length, the course is prepared to host more national, regional, and state competitions. The forward tee options provide a shorter course for juniors, women, seniors, and players new to the game of golf. Barton Hills is one of only a few clubs in the State of Michigan offering a set of tees that is unique and appeals to every player.
  • Environmental benefits include water conservation and fewer chemicals used to enhance the overall environment.
The membership of Barton Hills was very supportive of the restoration project which was started in August 2012, completed late fall of 2012, on time and under budget. The pace of the project provided for minimal disruption to membership and maintained accessible play of the course.

The Club invested over $1 million dollars to improve and restore the course. Due to the strong membership roster and the cash position of the Club, the project was funded without member assessment. The commitment from our members to constantly improve our course and club facilities is one thing that will separate our club from others for years to come.

A re-dedication ceremony was held to celebrate the inaugural 2013 season of the newly restored course. The Club is excited to showcase the renewal of the course to the members and their guests. Ron Whitten, Senior Editor Architecture of Golf Digest Magazine, recently visited the course and was very impressed with the results as confirmed by his recent Twitter comment...
